From its roots as a normal school, Northern Illinois University (NIU) has branched out to offer higher education on wide breadth of subjects. The university has an enrollment of about 20,000 students at its flagship campus in DeKalb, as well as at satellite locations across the region. It offers about 60 undergraduate majors and 90 graduate programs (including 10 doctoral programs) in fields ranging from education and business to engineering and law. Courses are offered at NIU's seven schools and about 40 departments. Founded in 1895, the university has about 1,170 faculty members and boasts a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1.
