What do former first lady Laura Bush, actress Kathy Bates, and NFL Hall-of-Famer Doak Walker have in common? They're all graduates of Southern Methodist University (SMU). Founded in 1911 by what is now The United Methodist Church, SMU is a nonsectarian private institution offering undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in arts, business, engineering, humanities, law, science, and theology through seven schools. It's one of a handful of schools nationwide to offer an academic major in human rights. Some 11,000 students attend the university, which has a student-faculty ratio of 11:1. About 85% of the 700-member full-time faculty hold the doctorate or highest degree in their fields.
