If you're a foreign journalist covering a story in Dubai or a news company that wants to set up a representative bureau in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), you need to check with the National Media Council (NMC). The agency, set up by the UAE federal government in 2006, implements regulations designed to help foster the development of a national media sector and publicize UAE accomplishments. NMC's primary activity is granting licenses (all individuals and print or broadcast media must be licensed) for news, filming, printing guide books, radio and TV broadcasting, opening a media bureau, appointing journalists to a bureau, and inviting an "art group" to perform in the country. In all, it oversees about 50 licenses.
