In 1890 Emily Dickinson's first volume of poetry was published, the Battle of Wounded Knee took place, Otto von Bismarck resigned as Germany's prime minister, and Keuka College was founded in New York's Finger Lakes region. Today the liberal arts school has about 1,600 students working toward around 35 undergraduate and graduate degrees; its focus is on experiential learning, which includes annual internship periods. An additional 3,000 Chinese students attend Keuka College in mainland China.
