The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs (IDVA) employs the heroes to whom the heroes turn for help. The IDVA assists veterans and their dependents with benefits, educational opportunities, and long-term care. Its field service officers provide counseling and assistance with compensation, education, pensions, insurance, hospitalization, and rehabilitation claims. The IDVA also runs four veterans' nursing homes, administers state grants, and runs the State Approving Agency (SAA) which approves college and non-college degree programs, vocational training, apprenticeships, and other on-the-job training for veterans. The department has an annual budget of about $95 million.
