It isn't known as the "Salad Bowl of America" for nothing; Salinas Valley is responsible for more than 80% of the lettuce grown in the US. With a population of more than 140,000, the City of Salinas' economy is primarily based on agriculture. Many major vegetable producers are headquartered in the city, and the area is well known for fruits and vegetables, including broccoli, carrots, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, and watermelons. The city's government consists of the mayor (two-year term) and six city council members (four-year terms). Salinas is also the hometown of famed writer and Nobel price laureate John Steinbeck.
