Beacon Power beckons companies seeking backup power. The development-stage company's flywheel energy storage systems provide uninterruptible electric power for communications networks, computers, industrial manufacturing, and other power generation applications. Beacon Power's flywheel systems draw electrical energy from a power source, such as an electric power grid or a fuel cell, and then store it. The power can then be delivered as needed when a primary energy source either fails or is disrupted. The company also makes photovoltaic power conversion systems (solar inverters). Beacon Power entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in late 2011 and was acquired by private equity firm Rockland Capital in 2012.
