There's a volunteer everywhere you look at Volunteers of America, a national faith-based organization that provides community-level human services to more than 2.5 million people a year. It works to help abused and neglected children, at-risk youth, disabled people, the homeless, people with substance abuse problems, the elderly, and prisoners and former prisoners. The group operates from about 45 offices across the US and counts some 65,000 volunteers in its ranks. It receives government grants as well as support from the public. Volunteers of America was organized in 1896 by Ballington and Maud Booth. Ballington's father, William Booth, founded the Salvation Army.
