There's a big demand for steel in old Brazil, and Usinas Siderúrgicas de Minas Gerais (Usiminas) tries its best to fit the bill. The company's finished steel products include galvanized sheet, slabs, plate, and cold and hot rolled steel used in the manufacture of automobiles, automotive parts, appliances, electric and electronic parts, line pipe, and tractors and other agricultural products. Usiminas also produces carbo-chemicals (pitch, naphthalene, disinfecting oil, and ammonia) for use in plastics, dyes, cement, and insecticides. Its joint venture with Fiat, Usicort, supplies Fiat with steel blanks and plates. Nippon Steel and affiliates own about 29% of Usiminas and about one-quarter of the voting rights.
