Union Agricultural Group (UAG) is sowing the seeds of agribusiness in Uruguay. The company, registered in the British Virgin Islands, is one of the largest corporate agricultural landowners in Uruguay, where its subsidiaries raise cattle for dairy and meat, sheep for meat and wool, bees for honey, and grow rice, soybeans, wheat, and even blueberries. UAG controls about 85,000 hectares, or about 325 sq. mi. of farmland (the entire country, one of the smallest in South America, is about 168,000 sq. mi., or a bit larger than California). The group sells its crops and livestock to food companies such as CONAPROLE, Marfrig, and SAMAN, mostly for the export market. UAG filed an IPO in 2011 but withdrew it in 2012.
