Japan Inc. would grind to a halt without Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which supplies power to 28.6 million customers in Tokyo, Yokohama, and the rest of the Kanto region. One of the world's largest electric utilities, TEPCO's 190 power plants have the generating capacity of approximately 64,500 MW, primarily produced by thermal, nuclear, and hydroelectric power sources. In 2011 the company faced a major crisis when its Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant complex experienced a partial meltdown at three reactors and radioactive material was released in the wake of a major earthquake and tsunami. The disaster confronted the company with the prospect of multi-billion dollar losses.
