The Office of the Attorney General of Texas defends the state Constitution, represents the state in litigation, and approves public bond issues. The office is legal counsel to state government boards and agencies and issues legal opinions when requested by the Governor and agency heads. The Attorney General also sits as an ex-officio member of state committees and commissions and defends state laws and suits against agencies and state employees. Other roles include enforcing health, safety, and consumer regulations; protecting elderly and disabled residents’ rights; collecting court-ordered child support; and administering the Crime Victims’ Compensation Fund. Greg Abbott was elected Attorney General in 2002.
