Terna turns the key to Italy's high-voltage power grid. The company, also referred to as Terna Rete Elettrica Nazionale, owns more than 98% of the power grid, including about 39,500 kilometers of electric transmission lines that cover the country. It also manages 367 transforming and switching stations in Italy, as well as 18 interconnection lines with neigbhoring countries. Other operations include plant engineering, power plant and line operation and management, and grid automation. In 2009 a unit of Brazil-based CEMIGacquired about two-thirds of the company's Brazilian transmission operations. In 2011 Terra Firma acquired Italian solar energy firm Rete Rinnovabile from Terna in a $909.6 million deal.
