A tree is known by its fruit, and for Stella-Jones that can mean utility poles. In addition, the firm produces pressure-treated timber and railway ties from maple, oak, ash, birch, pine, hemlock, and Douglas fir. It also manufactures marine and foundation pilings, guardrails, and other industrial treated-wood products, as well as consumer supplies: dimension lumber, fence board, and plywood. Stella-Jones has expanded into the US railway tie market through acquisitions of railway tie and timber producers: Thompson Industries (2011) and Tangent Rail (2010). James Jones & Sons Ltd (forest products, UK) and Stella SpA, through the Stella Jones International joint venture, control a majority of Stella-Jones Inc.
