The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio keeps an eye out for the state's educational superstars. Known as STRS Ohio, the system manages retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, as well as health care coverage for more than 475,000 current and former public educators and employees of more than 1,000 public schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions in the Buckeye State. STRS Ohio, which was founded by the state legislature in 1919, has more than $65 billion of invested assets. The system pays more than $5 billion per year in benefits to nearly 140,000 retired teachers and other beneficiaries.
