Pharmasset hoped its drugs would go viral on the commercial market. Prior to its acquisition by Gilead Sciences, the clinical-stage pharmaceutical company was developing a class of compounds known as nucleoside/tide analogs as oral drug candidates to treat viral infections. It had a number of candidates in development to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, a leading cause of liver disease, both in clinical development and preclinical research stages; one such candidate was being developed in collaboration with Roche.
