State-owned Perusahaan Pertambangan Minyak Dan Gas Bumi Negara (Pertamina) controls the entire oil and gas industry in Indonesia. The company operates seven oil refineries, four LNG plants, two propane (LPG) plants, and has numerous other fuel transportation and storage businesses, as well as a network of almost 5,000 gas stations around the country. Pertamina also invests heavily in the development of geothermal energy as an alternative energy source. Overseas exploration and production projects are located in Malaysia, Sudan, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Pertamina also works with dozens of foreign petroleum companies, but solely on a contract basis. The company was founded in 1957 after the oil industry became nationalized.
