Patriot Coal Corporation could fill the Christmas stockings of bad little children for years to come. With 13 mining complexes in Appalachia and the Illinois Basin, Patriot Coal mines coal used for domestic and international electricity generation (about three-quarters of its production) and steel manufacturing in the eastern US. The company's operations include company-managed mines, joint ventures, and numerous contractor-operated mines, placing about 1.9 billion tons of proved and probable coal reserves under Patriot's control. It produces more than 30 million tons annually. In 2012 the company and most of its subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to undergo financial restructuring.
