To a lot of Californians, utility holding company PG&E Corporation is synonymous with power and gas. The company's venerable Pacific Gas and Electric unit serves about 5.2 million electric customers and almost 4.3 million natural gas customers in Northern and Central California.The utility is also engaged in electricity generation; procurement and transmission; and natural gas procurement, transportation, and storage. In September 2010 one of the PG&E utility's major gas transmission lines ruptured in San Bruno, near San Francisco, causing a major fire, loss of life, and destruction of, or damage to, scores of homes.
