OPERS' opus is retirement planning. Founded in 1935, the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), manages retirement and health care benefits for nearly one million Buckeye State employees and their beneficiaries; less than half are active contributing members. Approximately 3,700 public employers participate in the system, including the state of Ohio, county and municipal governments, police and fire departments, health departments, park and conservancy districts, and elected officials. OPERS has some $75 billion of assets held in trust: more than $60 in pension benefits and the remainder towards post-retirement health care.
