Nexen is a globe-trotting, independent upstream oil and gas company whose three core businesses are conventional oil and gas, oil sands, and shale gas. Most of its conventional exploration, development, and production activities occur in key offshore basins in the UK North Sea, the US Gulf of Mexico, and West Africa. It is also a major player in western Canada's oil sands. In shale gas Nexen produces in northeastern British Columbia and the US, and it is looking for development opportunities in Poland and Colombia. The company reports proved reserves of more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent. In February 2013 China's CNOOC acquired Nexen for about $15.1 billion.
