In the beginning Royal Philips Electronics created an array of products to shed some light. It now produces light bulbs (#1 worldwide), LED lighting and lamps, as well as audio/multimedia entertainment electronics, electric shavers and toothbrushes, coffee makers, and other kitchen appliances. It also makes a slew of medical equipment for disease diagnosis, treatment, and management. Amid a down economy and weak markets, Philips has dumped noncore businesses, such as its stakes in TSMC, LG Display, and music giant PolyGram, as it acquires and forms JVs in its fast-growing businesses: healthcare, consumer lifestyle and lighting. The company's presence in developing markets generates about one-third of its sales.
