Groupe Hyparlo remains carefree with Carrefour. The French food retailer flies the Carrefour banner, operating a regional chain of about a dozen hypermarket franchises under the Carrefour name in France and five outlets in Romania. Hyparlo became a part of Carrefour, the world's #2 retailer (behind Wal-Mart), when Carrefour merged with Promodès Group, then France's #2 food retailer, in 2000. It was not the first time Hyparlo had switched banners -- it had adopted the Continent name for its stores in 1991 when Promodès bought into the business. The Arlaud family has sold its majority stake in Hyparlo (through holding company Hofidis) to Carrefour, which went on to take complete control of Hyparlo in 2006.
