It's plain to Green Plains Renewable Energy that, with stratospheric oil prices, there is green to be made in ethanol production. Formed in 2004, the company operates nine ethanol facilities in Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, and Tennessee. The vertically integrated Green Plains has the annual capacity to produce 740 million gallons of ethanol. It also sells ethanol produced by others, bringing its total to more than 1 billion gallons. In addition, Green Plains' plants, when operating at full capacity, produce about 2.1 million tons of animal feed known as distillers grains, the primary co-product of ethanol production. Another co-product is corn oil, sold to biodiesel manufacturers and feed lot markets.
