The fruited plains with their golden grains have yielded Golden Grain Energy, an ethanol production company with a plant in Iowa that converts corn into ethanol, which is most commonly used as an additive to unleaded gasoline. Other uses include high octane fuel enhancer and a non-petroleum fuel substitute. Golden Grain Energy's plant has a production capacity of 110 million gallons of ethanol and 120,000 tons of distillers grains per year. The distillers grains are used to produce animal feed. In 2009, with raw material costs rising and selling prices falling, the company cut back production at the plant.
