For those who can't afford to feed themselves, there's Feeding America, the largest US hunger-relief charity. The not-for-profit collects some 3 billion pounds of surplus food (donated by farmers, distributors, manufacturers, and retailers) and distributes it to more than 200 member food banks in the US and Puerto Rico. The food and groceries aid more than 37 million recipients every year, including 14 million children and 3 million seniors. Feeding America's programs include Kids Cafe (meals, snacks, and activities in community centers and churches), Community Kitchens (culinary job training for low-income individuals), and BackPack Programs (backpacks of food for children).
