Exxaro Resources is aiming to be a top dog in coal production in South Africa. The mining company, which resulted from Kumba Resources' merger with Eyesizwe Coal in late 2006, has positioned itself for both domestic and international growth in coal, as well as in mineral sands. It is exiting its zinc operations. In addition to a number of South African coal mines that produce steam and coking coal for metals and utilities markets, Exxaro has mineral sands and base metals production operations and interests in Australia and China. It is merging its mineral sands assets with Tronox for a 39% stake in newly formed Tronox Limited. Exxaro also produces iron ore through a minority stake in Sishen Iron Ore Company.
