While France has been slow to open its own doors to competition in the utilities industry, state-owned Electricité de France (EDF) has been quick to expand into global deregulated markets. One of the world's top electric utilities (as well as one of the last major state-controlled energy giants in Europe), EDF has a generating capacity of more than 618 TWh (primarily from nuclear energy sources) and provides power to 28 million French customers and 10 million customers in other countries (primarily in Europe). The company operates power plants in Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East. Its EDF Trading unit trades a range of energy products. The French government owns 85% of the company.
