China FAW Group pioneered the expansion of China's auto industry; it is still on top as one of the country's largest auto makers. FAW started off as First Automotive Works with assistance from the former Soviet Union in 1956. In its early days, the company produced a single model of truck. The company now manufactures a product line that includes light, medium-duty, and heavy-duty trucks, along with cars, buses, and mini-vehicles. It sells more than 1.5 million vehicles per year. FAW's manufacturing facilities are located throughout China. FAW has more than 25 subsidiaries and a controlling interest in nearly 20 other companies. It operates joint ventures with Volkswagen, Mazda, and Toyota.
