Centros Comerciales Carrefour (aka Carrefour España) is a leading retailer in Spain. A subsidiary of France's Carrefour, Carrefour España operates about 280 stores across the country, including about 165 hypermarkets, 105 supermarkets, and a handful of Carrefour Express convenience stores. In central Madrid it operates about a dozen Carrefour City shops after acquiring the Superma chain there. Spain, which parent Carrefour entered in 1973, has grown to become the French retailer's second-largest market after France and ahead of Brazil. In 2011 Carrefour spun off its Spain-based discount grocery chain, Dia, into a separate, publicly traded company.
