Cenovus Energy reserves the right to recover and refine oil in the US and Canada. With major operations in the oil sands plays of Alberta and Saskatchewan, the company has proved reserves of 1.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent. It also owns stakes in two refineries in Illinois and Texas capable of processing heavy oil that are part of a 50/50 joint venture with ConocoPhillips. That venture provides integration of Cenovus' upstream oil production with downstream refining of such consumer products as diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel. The company is aiming to achieve an oil sands refining capacity of 300,000 barrels of oil per day by 2019 (up from 100,000 barrel per day in 2011).
