What started a contender in the running of the banks in Spain, Banco Santander has expanded over the years to become one of the largest banks in the world. Beyond Spain, it offers retail banking and consumer finance in Portugal, the UK, and other parts of Europe, as well as the US. Subsidiaries such as Banco Santander Chile, Banco Santander (Brasil), Santander Río in Argentina, and Grupo Financiero Santander make it a top banking group in Latin America, which accounts for about 40% of the group's revenues. Other units offer asset management, private banking, corporate and investment banking, and insurance. All told, the company has some 100 million customers and 14,800 locations in more than 40 countries.
