Australia's largest freight rail operator Aurizon Holdings (formerly QR National) is on the right track. Its railcars primarily haul coal - Australia is the world's top coal exporter - for companies such as Anglo American and Peabody Energy. Aurizon Holdings' 1,400-mile Central Queensland Coal Network transports about 180 million tons of coal per year via 400 locomotives and 9,000 railcars. Its general freight division transports about 60 million tons of bulk minerals and commodities such as iron ore and agricultural products. After 145 years as a government-owned company, it went public on the ASX in November 2010.
