Alfa Group Consortium Company Profile

Alfa Group may not be top dog in the Russian corporate pack, but it's not for lack of trying. The self-styled financial/industrial conglomerate is run by oligarch Mikhail Fridman, who is also the group's majority owner. Alfa has interests in banking (its Alfa-Bank is Russia's largest private bank), asset management, real estate, insurance, and telecommunications (through holdings in VimpelCom, MegaFon, and Kyivstar). Other holdings include supermarkets (X5 Retail, which owns Perekrestok, Pyaterochka, and Karusel), vodka (Smirnov), media, and energy (Alfa and Access Industries/Renova own a 50% stake in TNK-BP). Founded in 1989 as Alfa-Eco, the group is known for its aggressive tactics in buying and selling.
