With its utilitarian stores (most don't have heat or A/C), 84 Lumber has built itself up to be a leading low-cost provider of lumber, building materials, and related services. Through about 250 stores (down from more than 500 in 2005) in about 30 states, the company (which is one of the largest privately-held building materials retailers in the US) sells lumber, siding, drywall, windows, and other supplies, as well as plans to construct decks, garages, and houses. Its 84 Components subsidiary operates plants that make floor and roof trusses and wall panels. In addition, 84 Lumber provides insurance, travel, and professional installation services.
