Commonwealth Brands has struck USA Gold. The discount cigarette maker gains new customers as rising taxes and legal settlements increase the cost of smoking. It and other discount tobacco firms now control a double-digit percentage of the market. USA Gold is its best seller, but it also sells Malibu, Montclair, Sonoma, and Fortuna brands. The company is the exclusive distributor for Bali Shag, McClintock, Premier, and Rave smoking tobaccos. Founded in 1991 with six brands it bought from Brown & Williamson (now part of Reynolds American), the company has eschewed advertising, instead counting on discount pricing for its success. Houchens Industries sold the company to Imperial Tobacco for $1.9 billion.
