The Colorado Avalanche is a professional hockey team that represents the Denver area in the NHL and boasts two Stanley Cup championships, its last in 2001. With a popular following in the Rocky Mountain region, the team plays host at its Pepsi Center home arena. The franchise was founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques of the World Hockey League and joined the NHL in 1979. It relocated to Colorado in 1995. Wal-Mart heir Stan Kroenke has owned the team and the Pepsi Center through his Kroenke Sports Enterprises since 2000. He also owns the Denver Nuggets basketball team.
