The Colorado Avalanche represents the Denver area in the NHL and boasts two Stanley Cup championships, its last in 2001. A perennial contender for the playoffs, the team draws regular sellout crowds at its Pepsi Center home arena. The franchise was founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques of the World Hockey League and joined the NHL in 1979. It relocated to the Rocky Mountain state in 1995. Wal-Mart heir Stan Kroenke bought the team and the Pepsi Center in 2000 through Kroenke Sports Enterprises. He also owns the Denver Nuggets basketball team and has a stake in the St. Louis Rams football team.
