Overview
There's big money in spare change, and Coinstar has turned the previously underutilized "fourth wall" area between the cash registers and the door in retail stores into a potential profit center. Perhaps best-known for its eponymous coin-counting machines, the company underwent a major transformation in 2008 when it acquired Redbox, which, along with Coinstar's DVDXpress subsidiary, operates some 33,000 DVD rental kiosks at supermarkets, big-box retailers, drug and convenience stores, and restaurants nationwide. Coinstar operates about 19,000 coin counting and cashing machines in the US, Canada, Ireland, and the UK that process approximately $3 billion in coins annually.
