The company also writes home equity, mortgage, and refinance loans. Founded in 1912 as Commercial Credit, the company was bought by former Citigroup chairman and CEO Sandy Weill in 1986. Weill, who retired in 2006, used the acquisition as a springboard to build what eventually grew into Citigroup.
