Chi Mei Optoelectronics Company Description

Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) is a giant in small components. The company is one of the world's largest makers of TFT-LCD (thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display) flat-panel displays. TFT-LCD panels -- small, lightweight, low-power, and high-resolution -- are used in notebook, desktop monitor, and TV applications. CMO also makes color filters, and is developing OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays. The company was launched in 1998, but really took off when it purchased a TFT-LCD fab (and licensed the related intellectual property) from IBM in 2001. CMO's sales have taken off with the increasing popularity of LCD TVs around the world.
