Chennai Petroleum Company Description
Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, formerly known as MRL (Madras Refineries Limited), owns and operates one of the largest refineries in South India, at Manali. It also operates a smaller refinery at Nagapattinam. Together they have a refining capacity of 10.5 million tons per year. Product lines include fuels (liquefied petroleum gas, diesel, gasoline, kerosene) and quality feedstocks for petrochemical end products (butylenes, naphtha, paraffin wax, propylene, sulfur). Energy powerhouse Indian Oil owns some 52% of Chennai Petroleum and Naftiran Intertrade, an affiliate of National Iranian Oil Company, owns 15%. The company was formed in 1965 as a joint venture of the Indian government, Amoco, and the National Iranian Oil Company.
