CESC Company Description

The name of the city has changed, but the source of its power has not. CESC is the sole power provider in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) and surrounding areas of India. The utility transmits and distributes electricity to nearly 2 million customers and has a generating capacity of about 1,000 MW from four generating stations. It's expanding its Budge Bridge power plant and has a proposal before the government to construct a thermal power plant in Haldia. The company was formed in 1897 as The Indian Electric Co. and was later known as the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (hence the CESC). RPG Enterprises, led by the Goenka family, acquired a controlling stake in CESC in 1989.
