Recent Developments

Jury Out on Interactive Advertising - Interactive ads, where one message leads consumers to a website where the ad message is more direct, have been used by several advertisers with mixed success. While Forrester Research estimates that interactive advertising will triple by 2012, others question the growth, saying that people will be too busy to go to the website or not connect the brand to the ad at all. Many firms are concerned that interactive advertising will backfire by failing to connect the ad to the brand.

California Denies Bar Exam Data for Racial Bias Study - The California state bar has denied a UCLA law professor's request to review bar exam data to help with a racial bias study. The request was for about 30 years of data for a study about racial practices at law firms and the high rate of black lawyers' attrition and difficulty making partner. The state bar refused the request on privacy grounds. Affirmative action programs have helped diversify the legal community: minorities and women now make up 25 percent of Fortune 500 legal counsel.

Ad Agencies Heading Back to the Future - Back-to-the-future branding is characterizing the ad agency industry as it undergoes unprecedented change. The industry wants to be viewed more as client partners, working with clients on creative content rather than focusing on wining creative awards. A number of agencies, including Red Tettemer in Philadelphia and Axmith McIntyre Wicht, have modeled themselves after the TV hit Mad Men, trying to mimic the industry at a time of excitement, passion, and bold ideas.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven heavily by the health of the US economy and particularly by corporate profits. While some professional services are necessary for the normal functioning of most companies, some of the most profitable services aren't considered essential and are often postponed when corporate profits are low. The profitability of professional service firms is closely tied to good marketing, because many costs are fixed. Small firms can compete successfully with large firms in their segment if they offer special expertise.
