WPD Midlands Holdings was formed when former parent company E.ON UK (a subsidiary of the Germany-based E.ON AG) acquired regional electric company (REC) Midlands Electricity from the US-based Aquila and FirstEnergy and combined it with its other REC, East Midlands Electricity. In 2011 the company was acquired by US-based PPL for $5.7 billion.
