Compañía Anónima Nacional Teléfonos de Venezuela (CANTV) is facing the competition. Venezuela's incumbent provider of local, domestic, and international telephone service since 1930, CANTV has nearly 4 million access lines in service. Its Movilnet subsidiary provides wireless communications to about 8 million subscribers. It also offers data transmission, directory information, and public phones. US-based Verizon Communications sold its 29% stake in the company to the Venezuelan government in 2007 for about $572 million; in total the government took over 86% of CANTV in a deal valued at $1.3 billion.
