Calpine Company Description
Calpine may get hot, but it also knows how to blow off some steam. The independent power producer and marketer controls more than 23,800 MW of generating capacity through interests in 60 natural gas-fired power plants throughout the US and 17 geothermal power plants in California. Calpine is a top geothermal producer; it owns 90% of the plants at the largest geothermal facility in the US (the Geysers in northern California), where electricity is produced from natural steam. Calpine has 725 MW of capacity from these plants. Calpine emerged from bankruptcy in 2008. That year NRG Energy bid $11 billion to acquire Calpine, but Calpine rejected the offer.
