Recent Developments

CPSC Proposes Flammability Standards - The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) long-anticipated upholstered furniture proposal outlines flammability standards for residential upholstered furniture. If mandated, it would dictate that upholstered furniture manufacturers comply with flammability standards and adhere to record keeping and labeling requirements. The American Home Furnishings Alliance supports the federal regulation if it helps furniture makers avoid conflicting state rules and protects manufacturers in personal injury lawsuits.

Real Estate, Furniture Sales Declines - Existing home sales, a strong indicator of demand for furniture, dropped about 16 percent in May 2008 from year-ago levels. The Home Sales Index, calculated by the National Association of Realtors, was 13 percent lower in April 2008 than the previous year. However, forecasters predict improvement in home sales for the second half of 2008, mostly due to unprecedented home price declines and greater accessibility to affordable mortgages.

High Point Hits Low Point in Production - Furniture Brands International plans to close its Henredon and Drexel Heritage plant in High Point, NC, a move that has become all too familiar to a town mostly built around the industry. Furniture Brands and other manufacturers have been steadily shifting production to Asia. The exiting furniture industry has resulted in massive job losses in High Point.

Competitive Landscape

The volume of home furniture sold depends heavily on the level of home sales, while office furniture sales depend on the health of the US economy. The profitability of individual companies is closely linked to volume, since many costs are fixed. Small companies can compete effectively if they produce specialty items or high-quality workmanship that can sell for a premium price. Imports have become a major competitive factor.
