Burlington Northern Santa Fe Company Description
Over the years the number of major US railroads has dwindled, but Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) thrives as one of the survivors. Through its primary subsidiary, BNSF Railway, the company is the second-largest railroad operator in the US, behind Union Pacific. BNSF makes tracks through 28 states in the West, Midwest, and Sunbelt regions of the US and in two Canadian provinces. The company operates its trains over a system of about 32,000 route miles, consisting of 23,000 route miles owned by BNSF and 9,000 route miles of trackage rights, which allow BNSF Railway to use tracks owned by other railroads.
