British Land is building its own empire at home. One of the largest landlords in The City (London's financial district), the real estate investment trust (REIT) owns and manages a roughly $36 billion portfolio of office buildings, superstores, shopping centers, retail warehouses, and other properties in the UK, Ireland, and select European countries. It directly owns the majority of its holdings and the rest is owned through funds, joint ventures, and partnerships. British Land is one of the largest property owners in the UK (along with Land Securities). Retail makes up about half of its holdings. Office properties include posh addresses such as its York House headquarters, Regents Place, and Broadgate.
