Blue Note Label Company Description

Many jazz enthusiasts would be blue without this venerable label. The legendary Blue Note Label Group is one of the seminal US jazz labels, with a catalog that includes such greats as Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk. The company continues to release re-issues from such masters as Cannonball Adderley, Stan Kenton, and Jimmy Smith while promoting new artists including Terence Blanchard, Norah Jones, and Amos Lee. Blue Note was founded in 1939 by German immigrants Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, who arrived in the US shortly before the Nazis banned jazz in their home country. The label now operates as part of the jazz division of UK-based EMI Group.
